These days I find it hard to really enjoy double fronts done by anyone except Ivana Hong and Maria Livchikova. That said the examples you gave are great, as what they lose in form they certainly make up with in power and originality. I can't remember who it was, but I remember seeing a gymnast perform a whip half into double front, American I believe. Very cool.

And thankyou very much!LloydMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15341630229725069671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7353917441739196825.post-31104589769339446302011-12-07T14:44:29.646-08:002011-12-07T14:44:29.646-08:00Agree with the double layout--has always been my f...Agree with the double layout--has always been my favorite--and the Onodi (my favorite is Ponor's--so fierce!), and front aerial out of a tumbling pass (Ekaterina Lobaznyuk's Sydney floor is one of my all-time favorites).

A new favorite I'll add is the double front on floor. While Nastia's are very sloppy, I still love to see bounders to double fronts. Also gotta love Produnova's Sydney front layout-double front. CRAZY hard. Lastly, Tia Orlando's punch double-front on floor - I know she never made it really "big" but can you imagine doing a punch double front on floor? And... at the END of your floor routine!? AWESOME! Her 2004 Nationals routine is here (also has a DLO and other great front tumbling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri2IydEgF2s)

I am new to your blog but LOVE IT! Keep up the good work.Bridgenasticshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06255496895568343614noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7353917441739196825.post-69225374813944870082011-11-08T01:22:52.519-08:002011-11-08T01:22:52.519-08:00Not a huge fan of the Nabs in this respect but def...Not a huge fan of the Nabs in this respect but definitely agree with all of your other choices. Hadn't thought about aerials on floor but I do totally agree. In fact I am a big fan of any rebounding that isn't the overdone 2.5 twist punch front layout. Aerials and particularly pretty as as is Shannon's layout stepout at the end of her second pass.

And MissEducated: it so is about the landings a lot of the time. Laschenova killed that vault, as did Nastia. Was never a big fan of Moceanu but that was a good outing for her.LloydMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15341630229725069671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7353917441739196825.post-28007720029920392822011-11-07T17:57:55.164-08:002011-11-07T17:57:55.164-08:00I'd actually say the Nabieva on bars. The form...I'd actually say the Nabieva on bars. The form is somewhat messy, but that skill is just WOW. It looks like she's freaking standing on the bar, it just looks impossible. The Korbut on bars is pretty darn cool as well.

On beam, the bhs-bhs-layout series with a very high layout (i.e. not Shawn Johnson). Deng Linlin in 2008 (TF). The Yang Bo leap. Actually the bhs-layout-layout by Komova (and quite a few others), that series is just so floaty.

For vault, a Pod with the kick-out at the end.

For floor, yes a double layout. And an aerial walkover out of a tumbling pass. A nice, controlled triple spin.Elanymirehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08140273464032721524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7353917441739196825.post-51423489044911420342011-11-07T09:00:02.157-08:002011-11-07T09:00:02.157-08:00I think this is why so many people talk about the ...I think this is why so many people talk about the 80s as being the golden years of gymnastics or the best. Routines rather than just individual skills were performed to perfection - a wobble on beam or a step on a dismount was the same as throwing your medal away and therefore because it was demanded of the gymnasts landings were stuck and skills nailed. It truly was a beautiful time in gymnastics and some of my favourite routines come from that era. That's no to say that gymnastics is worse now - it has merely evolved. But I really can appreciate the simple beauty of simpler skills performed beautifully.

Examples for me are Laschenova's 2nd FTY in the AA at the 1989 World Championships: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYCPjqzoCGA

I also liked Moceanu's vault in the AA in Atlanta: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wasFI91UTfc

And Nastia's in the AA in Beijing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTbPH3nYqXs

I think my trend shows that I'm a sucker for a stuck landing!

I love watching really great Ono turns on UB and piked/layout jaeger.

On beam I really like flighted full twisting korbut flics - like the one at the end of Yang Bo's sequence in this routine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPJYHKjwj4w (I still want to cry when I see her dismount).MissEducatedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07569314827320644463noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7353917441739196825.post-57756242818211534052011-11-05T16:59:22.434-07:002011-11-05T16:59:22.434-07:00Thanks, glad you liked it!

I loved the flight on Ling Jie's combination but she rarely seemed able to do it without a wobble. Done badly though they can be a mess so its a good example for what I was talking about (Produnova, for example).LloydMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15341630229725069671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7353917441739196825.post-65481063002348925712011-11-05T13:21:04.313-07:002011-11-05T13:21:04.313-07:00I love this! My favorite skills to see in perfection is a controlled and extended Onodi on beam and probably a double-double on floor.ashlynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08440526252366525197noreply@blogger.com
